First Day of Passover

Passover or Pesach is a holiday or festival celebrated mostly by Jewish people. They celebrate it to remember when God used Moses to free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, as told in the book of Exodus in the Bible. God told Moses to set aside this special week originally called "the feast of unleavened bread". During this time, the people eat special foods, do special rituals and sing songs. Passover is around the time of Easter (March/April). According to standard biblical chronology, this event would have taken place at about 1300 BCE (AM 2450). Passover is a spring festival which during the existence of the Temple in Jerusalem was connected to the offering of the "first-fruits of the barley", barley being the first grain to ripen and to be harvested in the Land of Israel. Passover commences on the 15th of the Hebrew month of Nisan and lasts for either seven days (in Israel and for Reform Jews and other progressive Jews around the world who adhere to the Biblical commandment) or eight days for Orthodox, Hasidic, and most Conservative Jews (in the diaspora).

1)Creative Family Passover Seder

Retell the story of Passover with singing, dancing, Dyenu conga-lines, pharaohs, art projects and more! Caterer Russ Moss creates a delicious and locally sourced Kosher, nut-free meal, suited to adults and children. (Check back here closer to event date for full menu!) 2) A Community Passover Seder hosted by Rabbi Peter Rubinstein

Join the 92Y community as we celebrate and re-tell the story of Passover. Commemorate and dine with the traditional and familiar seder cuisine such as matzah, bitter herbs, and charoset. Convene and help us kick-off the eight-day festival!

3) Community Passover Seder

Stephen Wise clergy will lead a musical seder on the first night of Passover unlike any other, with good food and wine, engaging conversation, and activities for children. Come share this cherished night as we recall the Exodus of our ancestors and our own liberation. Space is very limited.

4) Pop-Up Passover

March 25 the Gnostic Church will offer a Mass celebrating the Sunday Next before Easter (Palm Sunday). Intent: The Temporary Triumph of the Light before its Obscuration Gnosis is the Greek word for “knowledge.” Gnosis refers not to intellectual knowledge of mundane things, but to intuitive, internally derived knowledge of Divine things. Gnosis is mystic knowledge, closely bound with the experiences of revelation and epiphany.
